A kid with a bike
From an early age, Ryan Petry‘s mountain bike allowed him to visit friends, commute to school, and get to and from baseball practice. Growing up north of Detroit, Ryan never experienced actual mountain biking as a kid. He played sports until he began running local 5Ks and eventually cross country in high school. It wasn’t until senior year when he and a few friends heard about a triathlon in the Detroit River that he saw cycling as something other than a means of transportation.
Off to college, off the road
After a successful summer racing triathlons, Ryan went to Arizona State University to get a business marketing degree and pursue triathlon at an elite level. A member of the cycling and triathlon club, he made friends with a mountain biker who insisted he try the trails. After weeks of tipping over, cursing, hiking and smashing knees on handlebars, he was hooked. He loved the laid-back vibes and post-ride/-race beer, but most of all the beautiful trails he was able to explore.
Ryan continued competing in triathlons collegiately and earned his pro card, however he only used it in XTERRA competitions. When he graduated in 2014, Ryan sold his triathlon bike, moved to Boulder, Colorado and decided to pursue mountain biking full time.
As a competitor, Ryan is patient and strategic. He prefers longer races, which is what connected him with the Blueprint for Athletes Leadville Race Series. Ryan has completed the Blueprint for Athletes Leadville Trail 100 MTB three times, with his best being a 6:42 finish for 7th place in 2016.
Petry (Pea-Tree), as many call him, races for Construction Zone Racing out of Phoenix, Arizona. He’s excited to familiarize people with the CZ Racing name since the team will be at many LRS races this year. He took 4th at the Blueprint for Athletes Austin Rattler MTB on April 8 and is heading to the Blueprint for Athletes Tahoe Trail MTB on July 15. Watch for him at the start line!
